His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji is the 24th pontiff of Sri Suttur Math, established in the 10th century at Suttur, Mysuru District, Karnataka, India. Swamiji who assumed the position/Peetha in 1986 at an young age of 29 years, had his spiritual training under the guidance of his illustrious predecessor HH Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji, the founding president of the JSS Mahavidyapeetha, an educational and cultural institution dedicated to provide education in the rural areas of the Karnataka state.

Effort as a Religious Head

  • Been responsible for establishing the “Bharathiya Samskruthika Parishath” a national organization to provide a platform for the leaders of different faiths, with a mission of service to the society.
  • President “Foundation for Unity of Religions and Enlightenment of Citizenship” (FUREC) an All India Level Organization initiated by late His Excellency Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India along with other spiritual leaders.
  • Leadership in spreading the Indian spirituality and culture in the United States of America, by establishing the JSS SPIRITUAL MISSION in Maryland.
  • Initiated many activities such as retreat camps, birth anniversary celebrations of the founders of the Suttur Math and other spiritual leaders, organizing town fairs in rural areas.
  • Guidance to leaders of society and common man through constant interactions to bring harmony in society.
  • Has established Vedic schools and Gurukulas (Residential schools) for the students to study Hindu spiritual texts and scripts.
  • Chairman “Gurusangamam”, a confederation of indigenous spiritual moments led by the current torch-bearers of the indigenous spiritual movements of India.

Free Education School With a vision to provide contemporary education to the economically deprived section of the society, His Holiness has dedicated a Free residential school at Suttur for the benefit of 5000 children irrespective of caste and creed coming from different provinces of Karnataka and Tamilnadu. The school provides all modern facilities to children with an investment of Rs.15 crores. This unique institution has drawn national attention and was inaugurated by late Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, the President of India in 2003.
Schools for special needs children

His Holiness put into practice the dreams of his mentor/guru Dr.Rajendra Swamiji of providing knowledge base for the physically and mentally challenged persons by establishing following dedicated schools.

  • Polytechnic school for physically challenged, a first of its kind in India where technical education is provided with special gadgets to facilitate the learning.
  • A school for intellectually/mentallydisabledchildren at Bangalore and Mysore to infuse confidence and skills required by these children to have an equal opportunity in the society.
Dasoha The philosophy of Veerashaivism strongly believes in Dasoha, “Giving to the needy.” True to its philosophy, HH Mahaswamijipractices this philosophyevery moment.
62 schools covering 10,000 children of Yelandur Taluk (backward taluk of Chamarajanagar district) are provided free mid-day mealsevery day.
Meals are provided to more than 5000 children free of cost in free hostels run by the JSS Math in Sutturunder the direct guidance of His Holiness.
Mass Wedding/Collective Wedding To overcome the stress of wedding cost to the economically disadvantaged families, the Math organizes collective weddings/mass weddings of more than 200 couples. The mass weddings are conducted each month and annually at the Jathra.
Health Services

Under the guidance of HH Mahaswamiji, the Math has established JSS Medical Services Trust to provide healthcare facilities tomiddle and lowincome families.

The following are examples of hospitals established by the Trust:

  • Hospital with 1800 beds in Mysore attached to the JSS Medical College.
  • Dental hospital in Mysore with all state-of-the art facilities to serve 500–1000 patients.
  • Ayurvedic Hospital at Mysore, Karnataka and a Naturopathy Hospital at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
  • Primary Health Centers in urban areas such as Suttur and Hadinaru.
  • The Trust has also taken up the programof establishing model health villages in collaboration with Narayan Hrudalaya of Bangalore (a household name for heartcare), Bharat Cancer Hospital, Mysore and Vikram Hospital, Mysore.
  • The Trust is also working in the area of tele-medicine in one of the backward districts of southern Karnataka
Agri-based services to the farming community

His Holiness has established a Krishi Vignana Kendra with Indian Council of Agriculture Research to support farmers through activities like vemiculture (with the assistance Center for Aquatic Plant Research Technology and Infrasys). Central facilities for soil testing and online field demonstrations are established.  Under Swaranjayanthi Gram Swarojagar Yojana a program of Rs.15 crores with the assistance of Govt. of India and Govt. of Karnataka, was initiated with an objective to;

  • Identify 400 villages for seed production
  • To establish 20 seed processing units
  • To establish 50 Horticulture Nurseries and 20 Chawki rearing centers in Karnataka state.
HH Mahaswamijihas started many initiatives to restore the treasures of Indian culture and artto preserve and encourage the next generationyoungstersto take interest in the art and culture.

Art and Culture

  • A Sharana Sahitya Parishathis established at Bangalore with district units throughout the state to propagate the Vachanas of Basava and other saints.
  • A Sangeetha Sabhais establishedto promote music and culture.
  • A Kala Mantapais established to promotevarious forms of art with an objective to spread the traditions and values of Indian culture.
  • To support the cultural needs of society, a community center is built at Bangalore and Delhi where various cultural events are organized.
  • A central place for building the capacities and showcasing the artisan products is established at Mysore under the name JSS Urban Haat. The goal is to promote artisans and nurture the taste for artifacts in younger generation.

With an effort to bridge the gap between east and west (spiritualism andmaterialism), His Holiness has travelled abroad numerous times to organize/attend (on invitation) various international workshops/seminars and conferences on spiritual and contemporary topics.
